Volunteer Mentor Recruitment

“Helping Middle School and High School young ladies learn to love and value themselves and live healthier and more productive lives … Self-reliant and confident young ladies who realize they are the key to their future”

“We Need You!”

Mentoring is a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support, and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee.

Mentor Commitment

  • Attend orientation and 4 hours of pre-match training sessions along with a pre-match Meet & Greet with the Mentors and the Precious Me Inc. leadership team.
  • Make at least a 1 year commitment to mentor a MS or HS young lady.
  • One-on-one Mentor – Mentee communication
    • Meet in-person with mentee for four (4) hours per month
    • Weekly Touch … at least once weekly contact by phone, text or social media
  • Focus attention on the mentee: their interests, their goals, things they are active & involved in
  • Participate in quarterly service or group mentoring activities.
  • Communicate as required with Mentor Coordinator.
  • Participate in monthly In-Service training sessions (alternate In-person & Conference Call format monthly)
    • Example: August – Location In-Service … September – Conf. Call

PSE Mentorship 2.0

One-on-One & Group Mentoring

One-on-One mentors commit to being a friend and mentor to a High School young lady for at least one year, spending 4 hours per month face-time as well as connect time (call, text Instagram, Snapchat, etc.) with them. This is typically done on weekends or after school hours.

M&M LIFE Group (Group Mentoring) mentors commit to being a friend and mentor to a Middle School young lady for at least one school year, typically spending 2 hours bi-weekly with their group: typically a 4 to 1 ratio.

Key elements are:

  • Willingness to be transparent,
  • Work to build rapport with your cluster
  • Promote openness and sharing in a SAFE place
  • Collectively come up with group rules (gives them “ownership” of them)
  • Be sensitive to different developmental levels of MS girls within a group

Both types of mentors go through a rigorous screening process including; criminal background checks, professional and personal references, and personal interview.

The Benefits of Each Format:

Research has proven that One-on-One Mentoring reduces the chances of a youth deciding to try drugs or alcohol, and improves academic focus, behavior, attitudes, and performance and self-image. Results also indicate higher quality relationships with parents or guardians and with their peers.

Researchers looking at Group mentoring or Clustering have found overall improvements in mentees’ behavior, attitudes, and self-confidence. These young people got higher grades, had better relationships with their peers and were better able to express their feelings.

Both types of mentoring are proven effective ways to improve a young person’s life. The key ingredient that makes mentoring work is the formation of a genuine friendship between the mentor and mentee(s), a bond of trust that allows for a deeper level of transparency and sharing.
